There have been many Dukes of Hazzard collectibles sold over the years. From Dukes of Hazzard shirts to the iconic Dukes of Hazzard horn, the beloved show has touched countless people.
However, a few pieces of Dukes of Hazzard memorabilia have become more well-known than others. And if you think we’re talking about the iconic General Lee, you’re wrong. Perhaps the most famous and iconic of those items are daisy dukes.
The history of shorts is quite an interesting one.
In much of Europe and America during the early 20th century, shorts were only worn by boys until they reached a certain age, when they were deemed too mature to wear the style any longer.
However, once World War II began and soldiers began traveling to more tropical locations, shorts became more acceptable for older men to wear.
Despite that, in 1932, when tennis star Alice Marble wore knee-length, A-line shorts to a match, her choices caused an outrage. Unfortunately, shorts weren’t deemed an acceptable form of clothing for women until much later.
Denim cutoff shorts first became popular between 1950 and 1960, but it wasn’t until the ’70s that they got a lot shorter.
With the advent of the Dukes of Hazzard, jean shorts got a lot shorter and a lot more popular.
During the show’s run from 1979 to 1985, actress Catherine Bach immortalized short shorts in her role as Daisy Duke. Her portrayal of the character, as well as the iconic hot pants, earned the style the nickname “Daisy Dukes” after her character on the show.
Believe it or not, the actress’s shorts were so short that the network made her wear flesh-colored tights to prevent any unwanted wardrobe malfunctions on camera.
However, the fans of the show never seemed to mind the shorter short-shorts, and they’ve become a major item in pop culture ever since.
The classic item experienced a boom in popularity with the hit ’90s single “Dazzey Duks,” which saw several remixes. Since then, the name has appeared in multiple hit songs. In fact, pop sensation 3OH!3 made a reference in one of their most popular songs, “Starstrukk.”
Despite the affection of many male fans, there was also a practical reason why Daisy’s shorts were so short. The first five episodes of the series were filmed in Georgia, and the rest in California — two very hot places.
Despite the number of Dukes of Hazzard horns and Dukes of Hazzard DVDs sold over the years, daisy dukes have remained the most popular pieces of memorabilia.
