MUSIC FROM COOTER AND THE BAND

Hey Y’all,

I thought it might be fun to put some Hazzard County music on the Cooter’s Place jukebox. I’ve had a lot of fun carryin’ on with some great pickers over the years, and Cooter’s Garage Band is still going strong after all these years. So we’ve decided to put some tunes here on the website that can be downloaded and be yours for keeps. The first two tunes were recorded down in Atlanta back in the early 1980’s, back when the show was an enormous hit on CBS-TV. They feature the fiddle playing of Grammy winner Mark O’Connor, who was just a kid playing in a rock band back then.

“Battle of New Orleans” is a kid’s favorite. Written by Jimmie Driftwood, it was a big hit for Johnny Horton back in 1958. It celebrates that battle, when Andy Jackson teamed up with the pirate Jean LaFitte to put a hurtin’ on the Redcoats.

“Thunder Road” was the first great “Moonshine Movie.” It starred Robert Mitchum, who also produced the film, wrote the story, and wrote this great song. “Thunder Road” also featured Robert’s son Jim Mitchum, who later starred in the “Moonrunners”, Gy Waldron’s film upon which he based “The Dukes of Hazzard.” It all kinda connects up, doesn’t it?

These songs were put together in a basement by the brilliant Kentucky producer Bill Myers, who found them a couple of years back in the bottom of the vault…

Since we have always had a love of bluegrass and of gospel music around Cooter’s, we wanted y’all to hear the way we do bluegrass gospel, in the mountain tradition. “You Go to Your Church and I’ll Go to Mine” features the great fiddler Travis Wetzel on mandolin and Steve Luttke on banjo. Bluegrass legend Junior Sisk is singing harmony with me on this one.

“Redneck Boy in the Promised Land” is the title of my memoir and I am honored that David Olney and John Hadley turned the idea into this song. Dave and John are two of Nashville’s most respected songwriters, and two great old friends of mine. I told the band that I wanted the sound to honor Waylon Jennings, and they played the ever lovin’ Texas dirt out of it.

I enjoy doing this music as much as anything I’ve ever done, and I wouldn’t be able to do it without my friend and music producer Robbie Meadows, and without Cooter’s Garage Band. I hope you like these tunes and that you will give us your feedback on them. If you want to hear some more songs like these, let us know and we’ll put some more up for you.

Above all, I want to thank y’all for listening and for visiting cootersplace.com
